What is DISP?
The Defence Industry Security Program is run by the Australian Department of Defence. It supports Australian entities to understand and meet their security obligations when engaging in Defence tenders, contracts and projects, and sits on top of the Defence Security Principles Framework.
Do we need DISP membership?
Membership is open to any Australian entity looking to join the Defence industry supply chain. It is not mandated in every case, but Defence strongly recommends it for entities already working on Defence projects or seeking to partner with Defence, and individual contracts may require it.
What are the membership levels?
DISP is a multi-level membership program, and the level appropriate to an entity depends on the sensitivity of the information and assets it will handle. One practical distinction worth knowing early: entry-level membership does not allow an entity to sponsor security clearances. That requires a higher level of membership.
Does DISP membership guarantee Defence contracts?
No, and Defence is explicit about this. Membership does not guarantee work. What it does is make an entity eligible to participate where security requirements apply, and give access to Defence security services, training material and current security information.
How long does DISP membership take to obtain?
It varies with the level sought and how much of the required security posture is already in place across governance, personnel, physical and cyber security. The application is evidence-based, so for most small businesses the limiting factor is how quickly existing practices can be documented and demonstrated rather than how quickly new technology can be deployed.
